EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition

Awards given by a museum are more highly regarded among all artists.  The paintings are exhibited and are for sale during the final weekend in the Stables Building at Fort Concho, a National Historic Landmark built in 1868 and near the site of the original home of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

EnPleinAirTEXAS Competiton Over the past ten years, EnPleinAirTEXAS programming has centered around the EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition. 165 renowned plein air artists have visited San Angelo, experienced its western heritage, enjoyed its hospitality, and painted every hidden corner and backroad of San Angelo, its rivers, and surrounding ranchlands.

 

EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition has become one of the Top 5 plein air competitions in the country, attracting award-winning artists from around the world.  

EnPleinAirTEXAS is a signature event of The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.  The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a member of the Texas Association of Museums and has received multiple national awards.

ARTISTS SELECTION

EnPleinAirTEXAS prestige and success stands on the talent and recognition of its participating artists.  The selection for inclusion in the competition and the competition judging is done by nationally respected art jurors and judges.

San Angelo is known for its hospitality. The community embraced the artists, housing them in their homes.

ACTIVITIES

  • With true West Texas hospitality, the week starts with ranchers welcoming the artists to their historic private ranches to stay and PAINT.
  • In turn, artists paint a number of paintings for an exhibition and sale benefitting the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts’ education programs. Over $200,000 has been raised each of the past years.
  • Exclusive RANCH TOUR opportunity* to visit a nearby Ranch while the artists are painting. The public is transported around in ranch vehicles to watch the day's artwork being created. Limited tickets available.
  • Art Collectors STAMPEDE*. An exhibition and sale of more than 300 artworks, created by the participating artists during the week. Limited tickets available.
  • Come watch the Artists participate in the Saturday Morning PAINT-OUT at the Chicken Farm Art Center. This event is FREE for the public to watch. You may paint alongside the artists for a $10 fee.
  • Bring the family to SATURDAY @ THE STABLES at Fort Concho with FREE admission to the exhibit on Saturday.  Lots of festivities during the day and 'pop-up' painting demos with some of the artists.
  • JUDGE’S Talk - a free event at the Stables on Saturday, gives visitors insights on the selection of the winning paintings!

EnPleinAirTEXAS is introducing young and old to the natural beauty and historical significance of our West Texas area and culture, as well as giving us a prominent spot in the international plein air movement and showcasing SAN ANGELO as a national arts destination.

A focus of EnPleinAirTEXAS and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is to connect the area's 100 year plein air history with our West Texas community and with artists from around the world, creating an ongoing artistic dialogue that increases the visibility and participation of plein air painting with children, adults, and rural West Texas communities.
